SVHEC-Area Health Education Center recently partnered with Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital to offer a nursing experience for high school students.
During the first “Experience Nursing” event, students interested in pursuing a nursing career were given a unique opportunity to spend time at Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital learning about the nursing profession from practicing nurses.
During the two-hour event, Halifax County and Bluestone High School students were treated to a reception, tour, and hands-on experience caring for a mock patient. The patient, Mr. Sween, was portrayed by a computer operated human simulator manikin. Experience Nursing participants assisted Southside Virginia Community College nursing students and Sentara’s practicing nurses in caring for Mr. Sween, and interacting with the manikin in a hospital environment.
A highlight of the “Experience Nursing” event was the opportunity student participants had to engage with practicing nurses and to ask them questions about nursing careers and requirements for entering nursing education programs.
