SVHEC celebrated the opening of the newly renovated Leggett Learning Resource Center (LLRC) with a ribbon cutting ceremony held on March 25, 2026.

The LLRC is a modern learning environment designed to support student learning, collaboration, and success. The reimagined space features updated computer workstations, flexible seating arrangements, and small meeting rooms to accommodate a variety of learning styles and needs.

Before cutting the ribbon, SVHEC Executive Director, Dr. Charlette Woolridge shared that the idea for the LLRC came from listening sessions with students. During those sessions, students expressed a desire for a dedicated study space with good seating, lighting, and technology. “Students, we have heard you and we are pleased to say we have designed a space for you which reflects our commitment to our students’ success and to enhancing our region,” Dr. Woolridge stated.

Funding for the LLRC renovation was provided by Hitachi Energy, Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital (through the Sentara Cares program), Microsoft, the Southern Virginia Higher Education Foundation, and the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center.

“Thank you for making this possible,” said Southside Virginia Community College first year nursing student Kylee Barley. “I really appreciate it and believe students like myself will use it to learn, grow, and succeed.”

The opening of the LLRC is part of SVHEC’s 40th Anniversary celebration, marking four decades of expanding access to higher education and workforce training in Southern Virginia. During the year of celebration, the agency is not only reflecting on its history and honoring the past, but it is also making forward-focused investments to chart the future.

The Leggett Learning Resource Center will officially open on April 6th. Available hours will be posted on the SVHEC’s website, www.svhec.org, and Facebook page, www.facebook.com/svhed.
